Toronto's Mount Sinai Hospital pioneered, in North America, the Van Nes Rotationplasty in July 1985, as an alternative surgical management of osteosarcoma in the adult population. Originally, Borggreve (1930) developed and Dr. Van Nes (1950) utilized this procedure for children bom with congenital absence or shortening of the femur. Cosmetically, Van Nes Rotationplasty has an unusual appearance, but is unique in its ability to salvage the lower limb. This allows the foot to make ‘ground’ contact when fitted with a specially designed prosthesis.
