Abstract

Total knee arthroplasty first began in the 1940's, but its current state of development has really only taken off since the early 70's. Today there are hundreds of different models of artificial knee joints on the market. Even so, the art of total knee arthro- plasty remains imperfect, enjoying a somewhat lesser degree of recognition and success than total hip arthroplasty. In the past few years, however, medical technology has made inroads in correcting the errors of the early pioneers in the field of total knee replacement. This technology is continuously developing.
